Simple and Spicy Guacamole

Hi everyone! I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was busy and productive! On Saturday morning I ran the Run of the Mill 5K. I’m emotionally attached to this one because it’s the very first race I ever did. I was soooo nervous the first time.

This was my fourth time running it, and my fastest time yet. In fact, I improved last year’s time by 2 minutes! I’ve been running regularly, and I really believe this combined with the Blogilates vidoes I’ve mentioned previously are making me stronger. It feels good to have hard work pay off!


Today’s recipe is healthy and clean. I’ve mentioned that I enjoy watching Benji and Judy’s daily vlogs on YouTube (username It’s Judy’s Life) and for awhile I’ve thought Benji’s guacamole looked absolutely delicious.


This recipe uses sriracha sauce, which combined with the jalapeno gives it a nice kick! If you don’t like heat, maybe start slow with the sriracha and add it in to taste. I loved it though.

Guac goes with so many things. I tried it on top of a sweet potato, with plain Greek yogurt for dinner and it was SO GOOD. The yogurt balanced the heat of the guac and overall it is one of my new favorite clean meals.


Also pictured are kale chips from Trader Joe’s. They were pretty good, considering it is kale…not sure if I’ll buy again though.

The recipe is very simple – you need 10 ingredients. Avocados (5-6 halved), lime juice (2-3 limes), cilantro (coarsely chopped), tomatos (1/2 cup diced), onions (1/2 cup well minced), 1 jalapeno (minced finely), black pepper, cumin, salt, and sriracha sauce.

Place all the ingredients in a bowl, and mash each avocado half with a potato masher. Mash any remaining large pieces again, but don’t overmix. With a large spoon, stir everything together, and then taste. Add more cilantro, spices etc to your preference, and enjoy!!

High Five for Friday: Scrubs, Colors and Clean Eats!

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you had a safe 4th and can enjoy a nice weekend. Linking up with Lauren again today – here are five moments from this past week.


It’s so weird that I’ll be turning 29 this month…I feel wayyy younger than that on the inside. I guess that’s good?


I picked up some (long-overdue) new running shoes this week and I love them SO MUCH. The colors are so cheerful, and they are nice and sturdy compared to my old worn ones. If you live in Seattle, Jock and Jill by Green Lake is absolutely the best place to go for running shoes!


As mentioned before, I’m trying to incorporate a lot more clean meals into my diet this month. Greek yogurt and raspberries – simple and clean. I’ll be instagramming some of my meals (and would love to see any of your clean meals) – you can find me at @jessienextdoor.

I didn’t do anything too eventful for the 4th as I work early but I did get to watch my brother light some fireworks. Actually as I write this, fireworks are still constantly exploding outside my window. It seems like it’s more than usual this year?? Anyway I hope you had a really good holiday and enjoy the weekend ahead! <3

June Favorites: Nails, Notebooks and Workouts!

Happy July everyone! Here are a few of my favorite things from this past month.


These notebooks from Target! I’m taking Organic Chemistry and Nutrition this summer. It’s a bit of a depressing thought (although so far my chem teacher has let us go home ridiculously early each day) so I figured I might as well have cute notebooks! I like the look of the pages inside too.


Seche Vite topcoat. I love this stuff SO MUCH! I am an impatient nail-dryer, and always start fidgeting with something which in the past always led to messed-up polish. But then this top coat entered my life, and now my nails are literally dry within 3-5 minutes. I feel like I’m sounding like a commercial…I would totally make one for this topcoat though because it’s amazing!


While we’re on the subject of nails, this is the latest polish I added to my collection after hearing about it on EssieButton’s YouTube channel. At around $2.50 it is very inexpensive, and yet lasted several days longer than my Essie polishes. I really liked the color too.


This is not exactly a favorite (yet) but I thought I’d mention that I’ve been using OPI’s Nail Envy. This was not a cheap product, but it’s supposed to be amazing for nail health. My nails have been peeling for many months, and I’m determined to fix them. So far I’m seeing a slight improvement – I’ll keep you updated.

My last favorite is Blogilates! I’ve mentioned Cassey’s “Call Me Maybe” squat challenge before. I’ve been doing that one often, but also loving the huge selection of workout videos on her YouTube channel. Here are a few of my favorites so far:

Simple Summer Salad & Clean Eating in July

Happy Monday everyone! Today is the first day of July. I always love the first day of the month, because it is a fresh start.

Speaking of fresh, I’ve decided to take the month of July to really focus on eating clean. I’m intrigued by this idea, because I think it’s a lifestyle that can be enjoyable and of course really good for your body and overall health. I have a lot going on these days with work, school and volunteering at a hospital. I’m really trying to focus on getting enough sleep and also eating well to prevent stress.

I’m still learning what it means to eat clean. If you’re interested in learning more as well, this blog post can give you a general idea:

For the month of July, I’m going to really attempt to make every meal (or as many as possible) “clean”. I’ll be blogging about it, and Instagramming about it. I’m going to use the hashtag “CleanJuly” so you can check that to see all my photos. If you are also a clean eater (or striving to be) please feel free to add to the hashtag! I would love to see your photos and feel inspired.

One note – I am not giving up on dessert. No way! I love it too much. I’ll be cutting back for July, but I believe a truly healthy diet contains some delicious items in moderation. So there will for sure be more indulgent treats on this blog in the future.

To start things off, I prepared a fresh simple salad. One of the biggest challenges for me is fitting vegetables in my diet. This salad is SO GOOD and refreshing – I know it will be a staple in my summer lunches and dinners.


It is so simple I don’t even think I need to write out an official recipe. I used cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, cilantro, and feta cheese. (You could use dill if you prefer.) I tossed it with olive oil, white vinegar, salt and pepper. So good!!!

I’m feeling really excited for this journey! I have one question for you: What is your favorite healthy breakfast on-the-go?

Many days I leave so early I have to eat breakfast in the car, and it’s hard to think of options besides protein bars.
